A little redecorating…

Not only at stereoette, but at my apartment too!

A little redecorating...

My latest craft project is my bedroom curtains, and let me just tell you, I am *winging* it. The unfortunate result of that is that the right curtain is currently sliiightly longer than the left one (but that will be fixed). The only problem with my “fly by the seat of my pants” approach to home dec is that the curtains leave me a little bit unsatisfied. They need something to keep from being so “blah” and I’m thinking that “something” may be a little valance. Sarah has suggested a straight panel in turquoise, and I think I like that idea. Hopefully I’ll have enough turquoise fabric to make that work…

Prior to taking on my curtains, I flexed a little muscle (and injured my toe!) while putting up shelving in the craft room.

Evolution of a Craft Room

While not 100% complete, I think the room is looking pretty good. I especially adore my swimming pool blue bulletin boards that I painted while watching the opening ceremony of the olympics… It gives the room a little color without painting the walls.

Finally, I’ve started a little renovation here at Stereoette, as well. It was time for a new look, and while the layout is a work in process, I’m enjoying the change. I’m also rethinking the look and feel of my etsy shop, so do check back over the month of September to see what changes will be brewing there, as well!

Check y’all later…

Renegade Wrap Up

So its taken me all week to recover from Renegade (well, the recovery process was hindered by several late nights at the office) but boy, what a rockin’ show! It was only about a billion times better for me than last year, and despite the constants (that awful pool, the rain, the blistering heat) I had a blast.

Renegade Brooklyn 2008

My pal Alison (of King Popcorn) and i braved the elements (way to go, holding down a metal tent in the middle of a lightning storm!) and managed to sell a few things along the way… a few happy customers:

not to mention a few props sent via blog comment and photos found around flickr.

I also tried out a few new things, like the etched pieces, that I completely love and will be permanent parts of the stereoette collection:

Anyhow! Thanks so much to everybody who stopped by! I’m slowly working to get merch photographed and into my etsy shop but like I said, its been a loooooong week and I’m a little slow moving. But despite that, yay renegade!

Not a mystery… an adventure!

Okay, so enough with the “suspense” – here’s what I was up to with those illo’s last post.

Adventures in Etching

I’ve etched them into copper!

I recently read a great tutorial on etching copper and brass on Copperheart’s blog, and immediately ordered the materials. Etching is something I’ve wanted to try out for a while, but I was always really intimidated by the materials. Now that I have a porch, though, I can set the etching solution up outside without fearing that I’m going to die from nasty fume inhalation.

Adventures in Etching
This is how that plate looked *before* I dunked it in the etching bath. I tried a few different methods of drawing on the copper, including silkscreening stop-out fluid with my gocco (giant disaster, I don’t suggest it). I found that the best method for me right now is using paint markers. I’m definitely excited to try out PNP Blue paper though, I just don’t have any yet.

Adventures in Etching

This one is my current favorite… the finished piece will be named “Southern Ladies Don’t Curse.” Hopefully everyone will find it as hilarious as I do and it will do well next week at Renegade…

Adventures in Etching

A last new adventure was playing with the make-your-own-stamps kit i got a few months ago. You can see the stamp with the copper above. I’m not exactly sure that I did it correctly, as the stamps are a bit sticky to the touch, and they aren’t consistent in depth. I was using them to make PMC versions of the etched pieces above, but I’m not sure that its a success. I may just have to invest in that super scary stuff you use to etch silver… *shudder*

Adventures in Etching

this is the best of the pmc attempts. I’ll post more pictures once its fired and dunked in liver of sulfur. i do hope that this turns out, since I was looking forward to using those stamps!

There’s no season like show season…!

Okay, so Renegade Brooklyn is two weeks away and I am OFFICIALLY FREAKING OUT! This is mainly because I have completed NOTHING… absolutely NOTHING… since Hearts and Crafts. This can be partially blamed on the insane state of my apartment right now, but not entirely… we’re very busy at the office and while having multiple litigations at full speed at once is fun, its also VERY exhausting, so when I get home, all I want to do is sit around and watch “So You Think You Can Dance.”

A craft show banner??

However, during my television time I have managed to get one project started – a craft show banner! Now that I’m doing shows on my “own” (well, sort of, I’m sharing a tent w/ my friend Alison I need something to identify me to the crowd. I’m really happy with the banner thus far, despite having just glued on half the letters and having not gotten anywhere NEAR the sewing machine. But still. Its blue, its white it says “Stereoette” in big letters and its MINE.

Works in Progress!

I also had a good moment with paper and ink this weekend… I won’t tell you what these are for, but if it works out, its going to be REALLY cool. Anyone who knows me knows that I passionately love comics, so its really fun to do… *something* (trying to be mysterious, is it working?) related to that with my crafting!

Can’t point fingers…

Usually I’m the one nagging my friends about how they haven’t blogged in “aaaaaaages” but now, I’m in need of a lecture. Sorry its been so long! I’ve been working a lot, as well as trying to get the apartment into livable shape. However, I have had a chance to break in the craft room with a custom order.

Birds of a Feather

Aren’t these cute? They are buttons, connected by a chain with a clasp, that were intended to hold together a shrug at a wedding. I was really happy with how they turned out, and they were the first pieces made at my new jeweler’s bench!

Birds of a Feather

You can see a progress picture above. I’m loving having a real bench, although its taking some getting used to because its at a different height than I normally saw at. Also, my vice doesn’t quite fit on it, so I have the vice clamped to the sewing table still. Oh well.

Anyhow, the next few weeks will be spent preparing for Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn which is the weekend of June 14/15. I have some new tricks up my sleeve that will debut at Renegade, so if you are in New York, I hope you’ll make an appearance!

More later… maybe even some apartment pictures, since I’m getting much closer to having a place that doesn’t look like a warehouse!

Mad Max: Apartment Dome

Okay, I know you all are craving pictures of the new apartment, but I do swear, it looks like a post-apocalyptic wasteland in there. I kid you not.

post-apocalyptic wasteland (aka my apartment)

I don’t even want to hurt your eyes or send you into a panic by posting the large version of this. The bedroom (not pictured) is coming together though, and the craft room definitely needs some work but at least looks crafty…

Mad Max: Apartment Dome Mad Max: Apartment Dome

Yeah… it’s bad, but do cut me some slack, i’ve only been there a week! and at least the laundry room (yes, I have one of my OWN… INSIDE my OWN apartment!!!) is clean…

Mad Max: Apartment Dome

Also, today was Hearts & Crafts Affair and it was splendid fun as usual… thanks to Emily and Julie for coming by to say hi… and check out pictures of the cuteness here!

Movin’ on Up…

So I haven’t been blogging… but I have a reason! I’ve been so busy, yes, yes, that’s it. So busy, I can’t even take 30 seconds to write a blog post.

Actually, its not really that I’ve been busy… more without anything to say. Many things are in flux here at Camp Stereoette, most important being location… lil’ Stereoette is getting her own studio room! And I’m getting a new apartment! Unfortunately that means that currently, most of the good stuff is in boxes. Funny how having stuff boxed up puts a curb on your craftiness.

But that doesn’t mean that I’m not thinking creatively… I’m reading Decor8 and the Domino magazine blogs with a vengeance, and scouring Flickr for inspirational room photos, like these:

Decorating! Stuff I Love...

I’m also on the lookout for all sorts of useful decorating tools, and sometimes they come from unusual places. I can’t remember what blog I was reading, but they mentioned palatte generator from Big Huge Labs. You can take any inspirational photo you like, whether your own or one you like from the internet, and extract the colors in a form you can use in photoshop or just save and take shopping.

big huge labs = awesome!

And if you want to make your own color schemes, there is always ColourLovoers, a fabulous website for anyone who is a color junkie like me.

colour lovers = awesome!!

I’m still tweaking the color scheme, but you get the idea. There wasn’t space in this palate for the fabulous seafoam of my tufted chairs, but I’m sure you can imagine. So there will be many fun decorating posts around here soon, although, I’ll for sure be crafting too, and posting when I find out if I’ve been accepted to the upcoming big shows!

More Experiments with Glass!

I love running the kiln overnight and waking up to an exciting load of fused glass.

Even more new glass!

This is what I pulled out this morning!

I’ve been trying some new techniques. Specifically, I’ve been using scrapbooking tools to punch shapes out of silver leaf, and fusing them between pieces of glass. I think they are going to make really fabulous cufflinks, like these rubber ducky ones:

Even more new glass!

And I think these two are going to become lariats of some sort:

Even more new glass!

But my favorite new technique is really just making elaborate stacks of leftover chips, and they come together into these amazing stained glass-like charms!

Even more new glass!

I’m hoping to get bails on these and get them up on etsy soon. I have a few things that I want to clean up first with my (new!!) glass grinder and then fire polish, but I’ll probably blog that process too. Yay for glass!

7 (new and original!) things about me…

Shannon, who writes the fabulous blog Make It, has tagged me to do one of those “7 things about me” memes. I always struggle with these because I can never come up with original answers. Certainly I have more to say about myself than the same silly things that I always say (did I mention that I went to space camp? twice?). So here goes. 7 things about me that I haven’t blogged about before. I think.

(1) I played the trumpet in the sixth grade. (technically, the Coronet, which is like Trumpet Lite). I was so awful that the band instructor told me that I sounded like a “constipated chipmunk” in front of the entire trumpet section. Needless to say, in seventh grade, I switched my elective class to Art.

(2) I have a soft spot for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team show on CMT, probably because of my secret past as a high kicking, pom pom shaking high school sophomore.

(3) I have my own snowboard. She’s a Salomon Lotus 138 and her name is Shirley. I am madly in love with her, as she is nice and responsive and just right for a semi-mediocre rider like me.

(4) I’m a subscriber to the New York City Ballet. (thats like season tickets, for all of you still recovering from the superbowl). I’m also a member of Society in C (think Ballet Booster Club) and my name is in the playbill!

(5) I’ve been a Pittsburgh Penguins fan since I was too young to know that you didn’t pick a hockey team based on who had the cutest uniforms. I used to scream at Lemieux and Jagr as if they could hear me through the television, now I scream at Sidney Crosby. And, no. I’m not from Pittsburgh.

(6) I was so obsessed with ska in high school that I had a website about it. Mind you, this was over 10 years ago, back when you had to walk through the snow uphill both ways in order to post anything on the internet. And even though if you ask I’ll give you some indie cred promoting answer like Nada Surf or Sufjan Stevens, my favorite band of all time is still the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

(7) I made this yesterday, its a fused glass and fabric cuff with little sterling beads. i like it muchly and I think I am going to do an entire line of them.

Fused Glass & Fabric Cuff

(Was that last one cheating?)
